Next up on the UK Swing, we’re back at Celtic Manor for the ISPS HANDA Wales Open where Team TaylorMade have some new toys in their bags.

Returning from an impressive debut at the PGA Championship, Robert MacIntyre believes his game is in good shape to tackle the course which staged the 2010 Ryder Cup. Tour Representative Sam Day commented “We had a socially distanced catch up outside the truck and he feels really good about his game. He’s definitely one to watch this week.”

Switching into P7MC irons at The Kingdom ahead of the PGA Championships, he’s very happy with his setup, commenting that it’s great to see a left-handed blade! Working with his coach on a slight grip change, he requested that he wanted a different tape setup. Using 3/2/1, which is 3 tapes under his right hand, 2 in the middle and 1 under his left hand helps get his hands on the club in a more comfortable position. MacIntyre opened his ISPS HANDA Wales Open bid with a solid round of 68 (-3).

“The game is in good shape though and I’m looking forward to this week. I’m not too sure what I want from the rest of the season, I’m just going to play here and next week and then I have the U.S. Open and we’re just trying to win every week we’re out here.”
- Robert MacIntyre

Sami Välimäki has also been keen to test P7MC irons. A set was built for him this week and after a few tweaks to the loft and lie angles he was happy. He’ll practice with them next week as he takes a rest from the UK Swing, but commented that he doesn't see any issue of not putting them into play. Sami posted a first-round score of 1-under 70.

SIM DHY caused quite a stir this week as players look to their long irons to capture the perfect ball flight over the water hazards. Ewen Ferguson commented how he could still launch SIM DHY off the fairway vs his normal 2 iron option and how he was able to vary his trajectory and differ his shot shapes very easily. Immediately impressed it’s going straight in play.

The feel of a blade and stability of a Spider is going to appeal to a lot of players and our Tour team were asked about the benefits of Spider FCG a lot this week. Keep your eye out in the upcoming weeks as they start to appear in players bags!

Stand Out Build of The Week

There’s always one build that stays in our tour team’s mind, whether it’s a switch into new gear or even the slightest tweak that’s made a huge difference for a player. We caught up with Sam Day to talk through his.

“It’s got to be an Iron build that we did for an uncontracted player. They loved their irons but wanted them a little lighter, so we managed to weigh up some heavier grips which enabled the swing weight to be reduced by 0.5g allowing him to fell a little less head weight. Without burning all the heads out and re-gluing them, this was a quick and effective way to get him out on the course with the feel he wanted”
- Sam Day
High Winds at Royal Troon

This weekend, Royal Troon hosts what is arguably Britain’s biggest event both in golf and in women’s sport in general this year. With total of 32 countries represented in the Women’s Open, Team TaylorMade’s Charley Hull and Maria Fassi tee it up in Scotland.

“I will picture the fairways being tree-lined because I like really, really tight courses and I like to feel like tunnel vision, where this is kind of open and flat and it's hard to pick your lines because it's hard to pick out the fairways sometimes. So, I just have to be really focused.”
- Charley Hull

Charley revealed that she will imagine row upon row of glorious oak when she tries to overcome her reservations of links golf. With high winds, Charley felt the full force of the British weather opening with a 5-over 76.

Maria Fassi is known among Team TaylorMade as a long hitter, she leads the LPGA’s Average Driving Distance (219,82 yards) and arrived in Scotland ready to unleash SIM driver. Maria’s been testing a 5 and 7 wood, looking at different combinations for her bag depending on course conditions. However, this week, we’d expect her to favour her driving iron. Maria shot a 4-over 71 in round one.
