TaylorMade Gear

The original SIM line of drivers was built upon TaylorMade’s track record of using multi-material designs and the new installation of advanced aerodynamics provided by the asymmetric Inertia Generator. The new SIM2 lineup is far more than a sequel, it’s really a complete reimagining of the Tour-proven drivers with bold new constructions aimed at increasing forgiveness and playability, while helping golfers find the best fit for their game.

The three drivers in the SIM2 family – SIM2, SIM2 Max and SIM2 Max•D – share similar design elements, starting with that aforementioned asymmetric Inertia Generator. This area on the sole of the drivers matches the path of airflow on the downswing to help create speed as the clubhead approaches the ball.

That’s not new, but what’s new is the fact that each SIM2 sole is made completely of a lightweight yet strong carbon composite material. Nine-layers thick, the sole is built to take normal wear-and-tear as well as withstand the driver slam that’s known to happen from time to time following errant tee shots. You’ve never done that before, right?

The original SIM drivers had carbon panels on the sole, but going to a fully composite sole created new design options to increase performance in SIM2.

“We’ve moved from having a titanium head with carbon in strategic areas to having a titanium face area with other strong, lightweight materials attached to it. This lets us place the center of gravity precisely where we want it, and also gives us room to CNC machine the back of the face to precisely control thicknesses and create better ball speed on off-center hits by enhancing our Speed Injected Twist Face technology.”
Tomo Bystedt | Senior Director of Product Creation, Metalwoods

It's those three different driver models that are really the key to being custom fit for SIM2. Because the designs are so efficient, the decision was made not to add moveable weights. Instead, adjustments made with the loft sleeve – and choosing the right head design – can create 15-20 yards of directional change for golfers.

Fitters have a field day with SIM2 because they’re all fast and forgiving, but also offer different launch conditions based on player type. For example, the SIM2 Max•D is great for players who struggle with a slice. But, in many cases, golfers are hesitant to play an anti-slice club. We are all golfers, we know we can be prideful and stubborn. But given this model’s sleek aesthetic and similar appearance to the other SIM2 models, it’s been a popular choice among golfers who need a draw-biased head but have not played one in the past.

The SIM2 is the lowest-spinning of the three designs, making it ideal for faster-swinging players or those with steep swings. The Forged Ring on the SIM2 houses a heavy 16g weight at the back of the Inertia Generator to encourage optimal launch with low spin – without sacrificing speed or forgiveness.

“TaylorMade is known for really good low-spin drivers, and SIM2 is all that but with a bigger face and more forgiving performance characteristics. This is a great option for players who want a lower ball flight, but you’ll still get a lot of help when you hit it off-center.”
Jeff Kaiser | 2020 TaylorMade Fitter of the Year

SIM2 Max is geared for maximum MOI (forgiveness) with a heavy 24g tungsten weight at the end of the Inertia Generator for stability and forgiveness on off-center shots, and to help launch the ball higher with more spin than the SIM2 model. Generally speaking, you’ll see 200-300rpm more spin with the SIM2 Max, which is ideal for golfers who need a little more spin to help keep their drives in the air longer. The SIM2 Max really helps the player who wants to hit a nice high ball that’s going to stay straight and not lose much distance if you miss the center of the face.

Drivers with a draw bias have traditionally been designed with visibly closed faces and a lot of weight in the heel area to help close the clubface at impact. This can lead to a loss of distance and forgiveness, and a closed face can cause a golfer to subconsciously manipulate their swing to open the face at impact. With the SIM2 Max•D, some weight is shifted by subtly moving the Inertia Generator toward the heel of the club, while the two-tone visual design of the face and crown makes the face appear square instead of closed. The design also produces less spin than other draw bias drivers, helping to increase accuracy and forgiveness.
