Off the heels of the Ryder Cup, it seemed like a fitting time for us to do a 2025 season recap for Team TaylorMade and TaylorMade equipment on the world tours of professional golf. As we started to do some research, one thing became clear: 2025 was the year of the Spider putter.
In 2025, Spider putters won:
- 3 Men’s Majors: Rory McIlroy - Spider Tour X at The Masters, Scottie Scheffler - Spider Tour X at the PGA Championship & The Open
- 1 Women’s Major: AIG Women’s Open - Spider Tour X
- Two of the three legs of the FedEx Cup Playoffs: Scottie Scheffler at the BMW Championship & Tommy Fleetwood - Spider Tour Black at the FedEx Cup
- 14 PGA TOUR Events
- THE PLAYERS Championship: Rory McIlroy - Spider Tour X
- The Ryder Cup (used by four players)
- U.S. Women’s Amateur: Megha Ganne Spider Tour X Black
- NCAA Men’s Individual Championship
- AJGA Junior PLAYERS Championship: Miles Russell Spider Tour X Black
In a more expanded look to Spider success on the PGA TOUR in 2025:
- 6 of the top 18 players in Strokes Gained: Putting used a Spider putter
- 4 of the top 8 players in Putting Average used a Spider putter
- 10 of 30 players at the TOUR Championship used a Spider putter
- 6 of 24 players at the Ryder Cup wielded a Spider putter
- Going back to the beginning of the 2024 season, a Spider putter has won 28 PGA TOUR events
It is no surprise that the Year of the Spider has been led by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. They combined for 10 worldwide wins in 2024 including three majors.
Both Rory and Scottie saw massive improvements in their putting in 2025 on the PGA TOUR. Rory finished seventh in Strokes Gained: Putting with an average of 0.597 strokes gained improving from 0.173 in 2024 (59th). Scottie had a similar story finishing 18th averaging 0.382 strokes gained compared to averaging 0.095 in 2024 (77th).
Rory and Scottie play Spider Tour X putters, but they couldn’t be more different. Each putter was built not only for their visual preferences, but to best match their different stroke profiles.
"Rory's Spider Tour X has 30° of toe hang and a flatter lie angle compared to Scottie's. This helps give Rory more face rotation and arc through the stroke. Rory likes the putter to open on the backswing so he can close it on the downswing, which makes the short slant a good match up for his moderate stroke arc. On the other hand, Scottie's L-Neck has 21° of toe hang and is more upright. The lower degree of toe hang opens the putter slightly matching it up perfectly with his right-hand claw grip and more neutral stroke arc."James Holley, TaylorMade Tour Representative

Tommy switched to his Spider Tour Black putter before the RBC Heritage, where he finished seventh. Since then, Tommy went from losing -0.11 strokes per round on the greens to gaining an average of +.86 strokes on the field on the greens to finish his PGA TOUR season culminating in winning the TOUR Championship and the FedEx Cup.
At the TOUR Championship, Tommy led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting at +8.14 and Putts Per GIR at 1.53. He was also second in average feet of putts made per round at 109-feet.
The rationale behind the switch to Spider Tour came from wanting to try and correct for his tendency to aim slightly left and arrive at impact with a closed face. A flatter Spider Tour allowed him to get his hands lower at address and create a natural face opening and arc back into his stroke.
Tommy loved the micro-milled alignment aid on the zero-torque putter, so he and our putter rep, James Holley, recreated the milled sight line on his Spider Tour with a ruler and a sharpie.
"The fact that I now have a nice big line projecting to help me line up behind the ball, I just have to pick my line, walk in and set the putter up on that line and my decision's made. I think that sometimes you stand over the putt and you are adjusting all the time because it doesn't feel right. Having something on the top of the putter has actually really made a difference to my routine as well."Tommy Fleetwood
For the season, Tommy gained an average of 0.404 strokes on the greens (17th) improving from 0.040 in 2024 (92nd).
