As the BMW PGA Championship returns to Wentworth Club, there’s a buzz in the air that’s hard to match anywhere else on the DP World Tour. For me, this place is home. It’s where the game feels elevated, where every shot matters, and where the world’s best descend to chase one of the most coveted titles in European golf.
Wentworth is often described as a second-shot golf course, and while that’s true to an extent, I believe success here starts off the tee. Driving the ball well is absolutely essential. If you’re off track, you’re in a world of pain—trees, bunkers, thick rough—it’s all waiting to punish a loose swing. I’ve always found Wentworth tough for that reason. A bad driving day here doesn’t just cost you strokes; it can derail your entire round.
Finding fairways and getting it out there long is a huge asset. It sets up everything else. And when you do that, the par-5s become golden opportunities.
The par-5s at Wentworth are where you can really make your move. Birdies are there for the taking—and even eagles if you’re bold and precise. The 4th hole is a cracking eagle chance, and on the back nine, the 12th can be a game-changer if you hit a great tee shot. Players like Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood can absolutely capitalise on these moments.
Then there’s 17 and 18. The 17th demands a great drive, but if you find the fairway, you’re thinking birdie. On 18, a solid tee shot opens the door to hitting an iron in—an exhilarating way to finish a round. If you can play the par-5s in four-under or better, you’re well on your way to that magic 20-under mark that often wins here.
This course suits players who excel off the tee—those with strong strokes gained in driving. Rory is always a threat here, and Tommy Fleetwood, with the form he’s been showing recently, has a great chance. Keep an eye out for rising star Angel Ayora, he finished T-5 at The Irish Open and he's a big hitter! It’s a ball-striker’s course, and those who can combine power with precision will be in the mix come Sunday.
Two holes stand out for me: the 7th and the 11th. The approach to 7, framed by towering pines, is simply dramatic. But the 11th is my favourite. It’s one of the most gorgeous tee shots in England—downhill, slight dogleg left, fairway framed by bunkers, and the green backed by a thick forest of pines. It’s a short par-4, but it captures the majesty of Wentworth Club perfectly.
Truthfully, there’s not a weak hole out there. Each one has its own character, its own challenge. That’s what makes this place so special.
The BMW PGA Championship isn’t just another tournament—it’s the flagship event of the DP World Tour. Every player wants it on their CV. The energy, the crowds, the Ryder Cup players teeing it up—it’s going to be electric. There’s a real buzz around the grounds, and it’s a thrill to be part of it.
Wentworth demands your best, but if you bring it, the rewards are unforgettable.
