As we mentioned in our initial MG5 deep dive article, the fastest way to start shooting lower scores and having more fun out on the course is to improve your short game. But in order to get better around the greens, you need the right wedges for the job.
In this article, we're going to discuss the following:
- A high-level overview of both MG5 and Hi-Toe 4 wedges
- How proven TaylorMade technologies benefit golfers of all abilities
- Which types of wedge grinds might be best for your game
- How to optimize your wedge setup
- How you can customize your wedges to make them truly your own
MG5 AND HI-TOE 4 WEDGES AT A GLANCE
Both MG5 and Hi-Toe 4 wedges are designed with versatility in mind and share some similarities like the RAW face, Spin Tread Technology and machine-milled soles.
From a shaping and construction perspective, MG5 wedges take on a classic profile that was inspired by the best players in the world, like Collin Morikawa. They're also fully forged from soft carbon steel to provide you the best possible feel where you need it most.
By comparison, Hi-Toe 4 wedges feature an exaggerated toe pad that gives you an added layer of confidence at address. Because of the pronounced toe, the clubface is larger and more forgiving. The larger toe also allows the CG to sit higher which promotes low-launching, high spinning shots for consistent control. On TOUR, Tommy Fleetwood has a 52° Hi-Toe 4 in his bag. For him, the Hi-Toe 4's elevated CG allows him to achieve a driving, penetrating ball flight that launches consistently and makes it easier to control distance.
Hi-Toe 4 also features full face grooves in lofts 54° - 60°. This allows you to hit shots using the entire face while maintaining control. The bottom groove also has a gold paint fill that makes centering the ball easy, while also ensuring the clubface is square to the target.
Hi-Toe 4 and MG5 come stock in different finishes. You can choose from either satin chrome or charcoal in MG5, whereas Hi-Toe 4 comes in a copper finish. Over time, this copper finish will develop a patina giving Hi-Toe 4 a unique look that in no way affects performance.
While both Hi-Toe 4 and MG5 wedges are designed for golfers of all abilities, those looking for an added layer of confidence will benefit from Hi-Toe 4. Conversely, golfers that prefer a more rounded, traditional look will appreciate MG5.
PROVEN TAYLORMADE TECHNOLOGIES
While both MG5 and Hi-Toe4 wedges feature some common design and performance features, there are some differences worth noting.
To start, the grooves in MG5 wedges are saw-milled. This production process allowed us to create grooves that come closer to the legal limits of groove geometry. The grooves have also been reengineered with ultra-tight tolerances, steeper walls, and sharper radii - all of which help MG5 deliver more spin than previous generations of MG wedges.
Spin Tread Technology has also been updated in MG5. It's now continuous across the score line section of the face. Spin treads act like all-season tires on a wet road as they redirect moisture away from the clubface at impact. Working in tandem with the saw-milled grooves and the RAW face, MG5 wedges retain 13% more spin in wet conditions than MG4. The combination also helps maintain consistent launch angle between wet and dry conditions.
VERSATILITY WHERE YOU NEED IT MOST
Perhaps what separates both MG5 and Hi-Toe 4 apart from the competition more than anything else is the wide array of grinds they're both available in.
The majority of golfers are going to benefit from wedges that fall into mid-bounce grind category.
MG5 MID-BOUNCE GRINDS
Out of the three mid-bounce grinds in the MG5 family, the SB grind is the most universal as it's designed for a wide array of different swing styles and turf conditions. A gentle four-way camber creates smooth turf interaction and increased sole width provides an added layer of forgiveness.
The SC grind features the lowest bounce in the MG5 mid-bounce category. This grind's low-medium bounce and added camber in the middle of the sole, and relief in the heel, toe and trailing edge provide plenty of versatility in a variety of different face positions.
Last but certainly not least in the MG5 mid-bounce category is the SX grind. Its wide sole and increased curvature allow it to glide through the turf and sand with unmatched consistency. The reverse-C trailing edge allows you to manipulate the face while keeping the bounce consistent. If you play in soft or grainy conditions like bermuda or Kikuyu, this grind is a great choice.
HI-TOE 4 MID-BOUNCE GRINDS
In Hi-Toe 4, the All-Terrain Standard (ATS), All-Terrain Xtra (ATX) and All-Terrain Versatility (ATV) grinds provide plenty of versatility and can be played in all conditions.
The ATS grind's four-way camber makes it easy to manipulate the face to hit different shots.
The ATX grind is great for golfers who swing a little steep and take deeper divots because it's the most forgiving in the Hi-Toe 4 lineup. The sole features three different surfaces: the leading edge keeps the club from digging, the mid sole keeps the clubface stable, and the trailing edge facilitates a quick exit from the turf.
The ATV grind in Hi-Toe 4 is perfect for golfers that have shallow angles of attack, take shallow divots, and play off firm, tight turf. These golfers like to play with an open face and hit a variety of shots around the green.
HIGH-BOUNCE GRINDS
If you're someone that struggles making consistent contact, takes deep divots, or plays in soft conditions, there's a good chance wedges with more bounce stand to benefit your game.
The MG5 HB grind's high bounce design gives you an added layer of forgiveness without sacrificing versatility. Relief in the heel and increased bounce toward the toe make this grind perfect for golfers that take deep divots or play in soft conditions.
In Hi-Toe 4, the ATW grind is going to be your best choice for a high-bounce grind. The widest sole in the Hi-Toe 4 family, the ATW grind provides maximum forgiveness while also keeping the leading edge from digging into the turf.
LOW-BOUNCE GRINDS
Better players often prefer grinds with a low bounce. However, low-bounce grinds are also great for those golfers that take shallow divots or play off tight, firm turf.
The MG5 LB grind is perfect for players who like the leading edge to sit close to the ground. With that said, the beveled leading edge protects the club from digging into the turf and the added camber enables the sole to exit quickly.
In Hi-Toe 4 the All-Terrain C (ATC) grind's narrow split and reverse-C design provide ample heel and toe relief allowing golfers to easily manipulate the face, especially when there isn't much cushion under the ball.
MG5 TW GRIND
The MG5 TW grind is designed to match Tiger's desires in a wedge. In the 60° loft, you'll experience additional camber and a new leading edge blend into the sole that increases effective bounce. Additional relief is also found in the heel.
WEDGE SET MAKEUP
If you're going to take your short game to the next level, you can't leave anything to chance. That means having the right wedges in the right spots in your bag, and maybe even playing a combination of both MG5 and Hi-Toe 4.
Let's say you could use a little more forgiveness on full yardage shots, your angle of attack is relatively neutral, and you play in a wide variety of conditions. However, maybe you like the look of a more traditional wedge as you get closer to the green. In this scenario, you might opt for a 50° or 52° Hi-Toe wedge in the ATS grind to give your the full-swing forgiveness you're looking for, and a combinationm of MG5 54°, 56°, 58° and 60° wedge for shots closer to the green.
