Millie Bright has always been known for her power, precision, and passion on the pitch. But now, the Chelsea Women’s Captain and Lioness star is channelling that same energy into a new pursuit—golf. And while the sport may seem worlds apart from football, for Millie, it’s a challenge she is relishing.
“I get the same satisfaction hitting a ball as I do kicking one,” she says, “I’ve got the drive to get better. That’s who I am.”
Millie’s journey into golf isn’t just about picking up a new hobby, she’s embracing the challenge of starting from scratch. “When I started to play football, I didn’t know where it was going to take me, and I see that same possibility with golf.”
But it’s not just the physical side of the golf that’s captured her attention—it’s the mental escape it offers. “Life is chaotic. Football is fast paced. Even today, just being here hitting balls, I found it relaxing. It’s a calm that I don’t have with football. And that excites me.”
“You’ve got to start somewhere,” she laughs, “and for me, that was whacking balls at a driving range and loving every second of it.”
But don’t let the casual start fool you. Millie’s competitive streak kicked in almost immediately. “I’ve got the itch. I’m super competitive. I get the same feeling with golf as I do when I’m in the zone on the pitch.”
Transitioning from a team sport to an individual one brings its own set of challenges. “In football, if I make a mistake, I’ve got my teammates. In golf, it’s just me. This is new for me, having to deal with the frustration, pull myself back into performing. That’s a challenge I’m really interested in.”
“It’s completely different from my day-to-day,” she says, grinning. “You don’t just swing and hope for the best—well, actually, sometimes you do!”
Her recent club fitting experience at the TaylorMade Performance Lab at Wentworth Club was a revelation. “I had no idea how much detail goes into it. I walked in feeling confident, then saw the setup and felt the pressure. But I loved it. I can see myself becoming obsessed.”
Moving from big, powerful shots to the delicate art of wedge play was a humbling shift. “I told my club fitter Ollie, ‘This is my worst shot,’” she admits. “I was bracing for disaster.”
But with Ollie’s guidance and a few tweaks to her stance and technique, something clicked. “Suddenly, I felt super comfortable. Within a few shots, I was seeing improvements and giving myself a little pep talk—‘You’ve got this, c’mon.’”
From mis-hits that barely leave the mat to those rare, glorious clean strikes, Millie is now part of the club—the one where frustration and obsession go hand in hand.
So, what’s next for Millie Bright, the golfer? “Get practicing. Get some lessons in. My first milestone is a full 18. Then—who knows?”
