Qualifying for The Open has always been a dream of mine, and to achieve it at such a historic venue like Royal Portrush is incredibly special. I'm thrilled to compete against the best in the world and the 153rd Open Championship.
Qualifying for The Open at the Italian Open was an amazing experience. I had an opportunity to qualify through the rankings, but it wasn’t clear before Munich if I would make it. Securing my qualification at the Italian Open felt perfect, like a dream come true. Seeing The Open flag just behind the 18th green after I finished was an incredible moment. Realising that I’m going to play in my first major is just crazy.
My mindset switched to Royal Portrush right after the Italian Open. During the week in Munich, I was already thinking about the Genesis Scottish Open and The 153rd Open Championship, which affected my performance in Munich. I've been focused on this week for the last three weeks. In terms of equipment, I don’t usually use a 2 iron a lot in tournaments, but I tried it for the first time last week in Scotland and decided to keep it in the bag for Royal Portrush. So, it’s 2 iron in, and 5 wood out.
My preparation routine doesn’t change much; I always try to do my best every week. However, I’ve been practicing hitting more low balls to prepare for windy conditions. This week, I’ll spend a lot more time on the course because it’s really different and complicated. I plan to walk the course from every single position and study every putt to formulate a solid game plan. This means more time on the course and less time on the practice area than usual.
There's nothing that can prepare you for the moment when you step onto the first tee, but I'm excited for the challenge of Royal Portrush. Soaking in the crowds during my practise rounds, walking the course, talking to Sam, Mark and Alex at TaylorMade has really set me up to do my best. I can't wait!
