Actualités du Tour

With a remarkable performance at the ISPS Handa Australian Open, Team TaylorMade’s Ryggs Johnston not only clinched the title but also secured his place at The 153rd Open Championship. As he prepares to take on the challenges of Portrush, we had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss his experiences, his season to date, and his preparations for his first Major Championship.

The Four Days That Changed Everything

Leading up to the Australian Open, I had a pretty good stretch of golf going from the end of summer into Q School. It was my second event on tour, so I didn’t really have any expectations. I made the cut the week before on the number with a birdie on the last on Friday, which was pretty cool, and I was just happy to be out there that week.

At the Australian, I knew my golf game was good, and after playing well the first couple of days, I knew that I probably had a shot to win it. I just went out there and played my own game, and it worked out in my favour. Knowing that there was a spot at Portrush on the line made it extra special because I’ve never played in a Major Championship before. This will be my first one, a dream come true, and I just can’t wait to get there.

Reflecting on The Season So Far

This season has been a bit of a rollercoaster after the win. I played pretty well for a couple of weeks after that, but I would definitely say I haven’t played up to my expectations since then.

I had a decent week in Germany a few weeks ago finishing T26 at the BMW International Open and really enjoyed my time at The Genesis Scottish Open, so I’m hoping to use that as a bit of momentum ahead of Portrush. It’s been an up-and-down season, but I’m happy to be where I’m at right now.

Countdown to Portrush

With Portrush getting closer, I’ve been listening to some podcasts and watching some videos on how the course plays because it will be a new experience for me. I’ll definitely be working with the TaylorMade guys to try and get that ball flight lower and make a few minor equipment changes. For the most part, I want to be as comfortable as possible, so I’ll keep everything pretty standard, but hopefully, I’ll just hit the ball a little lower.

Gearing Up for a Major Debut

I’m playing the week before in Scotland, so I’ll get there Sunday night. Usually, Monday morning, I’ll get to the course and familiarise myself with the setup and get some practice in before playing 9 holes. Then on Tuesday, I’ll play 18 holes early in the morning because the rounds are faster, then I’ll do a little practice after that.

Away from the course I’ll also do my workout routines on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to help with my mobility. I’d then play 9 holes on Wednesday too, again in the morning, and then a little more practice before resting in the evening and getting ready to go Thursday. Overall, it’s a pretty standard routine for me for the week, just keeping to what I’m used to.

Walking The Fairways of Royal Portrush

The course is challenging, but I loved every moment of it. I'm very excited and can't wait to get going! It was great to see fans out on the course, I couldn't believe the amount that stayed to watch our round. I honestly can't wait to be on the first tee on Thursday.
